This map shows the Negro colleges and a few of the famous Negroes born in Alabama.  (Dr. Carver and B. T. Washington are shown because they achieved their greatest fame in Ala. and because of their profound influence upon the state.)  Jesse Owens, the track star; Percy Julian, largest Negro manufacturer; Erskine Hawkins, famous band leader and trunpeter, Sam Lowe (composer of musical hit "Tuxedo Junction") and many, many more famous Negroes who were born in Ala. aren't shown due to lack of space.
